If you give time or food to pantries around Middle Tennessee, this one's for you. Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee broke ground Oct. 27 on a 200,000-square-foot campus at 1301 Donelson Pike. It replaces the 10-acre MetroCenter site the food bank has used for 25 years.
The need is big. Second Harvest serves a 46-county region where nearly 500,000 people lack reliable access to food, and it provided 43 million meals last year against a need of almost 91 million. WTVF says the new site will nearly double its cold storage. Volunteer hours are expected to grow from about 84,500 last year to more than 125,000 a year.
