If you're a dog person, this one's for you. The Humane Society of Sumner County in Hendersonville closed to the public on Halloween after 4-month-old Powder, one of its puppies, tested positive for parvovirus. The shelter plans to stay closed until Nov. 14 while it monitors its other dogs.
- Drop off at the front door: bleach, latex gloves in all sizes
- Also needed: shoe covers, gowns and cans of pure pumpkin
- Money: veterinary care, testing, medications, cleaning and general animal care
The shelter is a nonprofit that receives no government funding, so it's leaning on donations. If you can't give, the shelter said sharing its fundraiser helps, too.
Parvo is highly contagious and can be deadly, especially for younger dogs. Puppies between 6 and 20 weeks old face greater risk, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Signs include lethargy, vomiting and severe, often bloody, diarrhea. We suggest calling your vet right away if you see them.
The shelter will stay closed to the public until Nov. 14
