- ➤ This weekend, five events are planned in and near Sumner County: in Hendersonville, Jolly Ollie’s celebrates 15 years on Saturday, June 21 with Crooked Eye Tommy performing plus Gallatin hosts a two-day Juneteenth festival starting today; additional events include today’s $5 Kids Summer Movie Series screening of Cinderella at The Palace Theater, Flower Fest in Downtown Square on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a Community Shoreline Cleanup at Mallard Point Boat Launch on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with food trucks arriving after the cleanup. - ➤ Local author Rose Prendeville’s Highland historical romance novel Maggie and the Pirate’s Son won a silver award at the 37th annual IBPA Book Awards last month in St. Paul — it also earned a bronze at the 27th Foreword INDIES awards three weeks later, marking a double win for her work. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On June 16, the Hendersonville Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the 2026 fiscal year budget that earmarks about $64.745m from the general fund and $17m for capital projects including Heritage Park and various road and park improvements—salary adjustments were approved with higher increases for lower-paid employees and an amendment redirected $75,000 from a franchise agreement with Piedmont Gas to boost fire department pay. The measures also include provisions to adjust base salaries so that employees are not eclipsed by subordinate pay rates. Hendersonville Standard
- ➤ Sumner County Property Assessor John Hurt has proposed raising the tax rate for 2,000 rental homes from 25 percent to 40 percent—citing their use as income-producing properties. The county commission will vote on a resolution to ask Hurt to reconsider, and owners may file an appeal with the Board of Equalization by June 13—steps that could lead to higher rental costs.
