GOVERNMENT NEWS

- ➤ The Hendersonville Parks Department applied for a state grant to fund over $6.5M in improvements to local parks—plans include a new inclusive playground at Sanders Ferry Park, upgraded facilities at Drakes Creek and Veterans Parks, and other updates; if approved, the city will match the funds with $2M in cash and $2.6M in land, and a decision is expected in August. - ➤ Sumner County’s Recovery Court, directed by Tracye Bryant since 2003, has saved the county roughly $15,000 a year by helping nonviolent offenders get support, gain jobs, and avoid jail time. The program is planning to renovate 8,000 sq ft of old courthouse space — to be shared with the Sheriff’s Department — which will create a more secure and centralized facility for testing, classes, and court meetings. - ➤ At its meeting on April 8, the Hendersonville Board of Mayor and Aldermen postponed the vote on an ordinance requiring registration, inspection and monitoring of vacant commercial and industrial buildings. Aldermen Mark Skidmore and Rachel Collins said a workshop will be held to revise the proposal — addressing fire hazards, safety concerns and rising fees — before it is reconsidered.
